VIN, interchange numbers, and what to ask before you buy.
Start with your VIN and engine code
Your VIN identifies the exact engine, displacement, and emissions package your vehicle left the factory with. When shopping for a used engine in Colorado Springs, always provide the full VIN to the parts desk before you commit.
Check interchange numbers
Automotive recyclers use Hollander interchange and OEM part numbers to match donor engines. Two engines may look identical but differ in sensors, flex plates, or exhaust manifolds.
Ask about testing and warranty
Quality yards compression-test or spin-test engines when possible. Ask what is included — long block vs complete, and whether a core charge applies.
Plan for installation costs
A used engine saves money on the unit, but labor, fluids, gaskets, and possible ancillary parts add up. Compare total installed cost versus repairing your existing engine.
