Deposits, returns, and why they exist on engines and alternators.
What a core charge is
A core charge is a refundable deposit on your old part. Recyclers remanufacture or scrap cores for metal and rebuild value.
Common core parts
Engines, alternators, starters, and some steering components often carry core charges. The amount is listed separately from purchase price.
Returning your core
You typically have a set window to return the old unit in acceptable condition. Missing components may reduce your refund.
Why it exists
Cores keep recyclable material in the supply chain and help keep used part prices lower than fully rebuilt units.
